The Wingrove Collection of original models -
At 70 years of age, Gerald Wingrove has decided to retire, or rather to give himself the opportunity to focus on his real passion ? that of making model ships. He is therefore bidding goodbye to the business of automobile model making and offering for sale all his model samples, models, photographs and other original or related materials from his studio.
This important Bonhams sale offers collectors the unique opportunity to acquire items of the most impeccable possible Gerald Wingrove provenance possible.
The Wingrove Studio Collection of 1/15th scale model car chassis and engines from the Wingrove Studio was created to show prospective collectors the detailing contained but rarely seen, in a Wingrove miniature, because the majority of painstaking fine work is concealed by the bodywork of the completed car model. These chassis models are unique, having never before been offered for sale (with the exception of one Alfa Romeo 8C-2900 chassis). Each one is individually fabricated in brass and nickel silver, then nickel plated and sand blasted to produce this particular finish. The engines are cast in a high tin content alloy to simulate cast aluminium.
Wingrove?s 1/32 scale Brass Masters Collection was inspired by the 1935 810 Cord bronze designed by Gordon Buehrig. These were distributed by the Cord Corporation to customers as a Christmas present in lieu of the full size car that they had ordered. The 810 Cord created such a sensation that many more orders were taken than could possibly be filled. In the late 1960s, Gerald Wingrove was asked if he could reproduce the 810 Cord Bronze. He initially declined, but later accepted the challenge. The Cord model is included in this Bonhams sale, as are the other five from Mr Wingrove?s much-coveted 1/32 Brass Masters series.
Another of Gerald Wingrove?s ideas was to use his workshop to make jewellery, leading to the introduction of his silver collection. The workshop produced a set of eight masters of four American and four European classic cars carved in brass for silver tiepins and cufflinks. To be offered in the Bonhams? sale is the only complete sample produced in sterling silver and fully hallmarked. Subsequently the Wingroves were approached by a leading silversmith to help produce a solid silver, fully detailed model of a Duesenberg engine.
The Gerald Wingrove Studio Collection also includes paintings of 1/15th scale drawings, samples and drawings for Meccano and Corgi toys, framed photographs and a selection of books from the Wingrove Studio reference library.
?For classic car and model collectors worldwide, news of this internationally-renowned master model makers? studio collection sale provides a sensational opportunity to acquire some of the maestro?s finest and most personal work ? direct from his ownership ? perfect work with the most perfect possible provenance? said Bonhams? Head of Automobilia Toby Wilson.
