February 1, 2008 -- Sonoma, California -- Flying Lizard Motorsports announced today the team's plans for the 2008 American Le Mans Series racing season.

The California-based racing team will field three Porsche 2008 911 GT3 RSRs in the GT2 class: the No. 44, No. 45, and No. 46 Flying Lizard Porsches.

In the No. 45 and No. 46 Porsches, drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Johannes van Overbeek (U.S.A) will return in 2008 and will be joined by Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Patrick Pilet (France). Henzler competed with the Lizards in the 2006 season with van Overbeek, finishing second in the GT2 drivers' championship. Pilet, winner of the 2007 French Carrera Cup, is new to the American Le Mans Series: 2008 will be his inaugural season in the U.S. Darren Law, Seth Neiman, and Lonnie Pechnik will all return in 2008 to share driving duties in the No. 44 Porsche. 2008 will be Flying Lizard's fifth consecutive ALMS season. Since its first year of competition in 2004, the team has finished in the top three in the ALMS GT2 team and drivers' championships, but has not yet won the GT2 title. In 2007, in the No. 45, van Overbeek and Bergmeister challenged the No. 62 Risi Ferrari to a memorable, season-long contest. Three race wins, including the flagship 1000-mile Petit Le Mans, were not enough to clinch the title from Ferrari, and the No. 45 and the team were second in the 2007 championships.

Team principal Seth Neiman is looking forward to the team's fifth season, "For 2008 we made a thoughtful decision to expand our program and our commitment to Porsche and the series. We're focused on launching the most competitive program possible: three new cars and the most experienced Porsche driver lineup in our history. Last year, Ferrari proved to be a formidable competitor, and everything points to this being the case again this season. GT2 is shaping up to be an exciting field again in 08: it's definitely going to be an eventful year!"

Paul Ritchie, head of Porsche Motorsports North America, commented, "Porsche is very pleased to have a team of Flying Lizard's experience and commitment taking the lead in our GT2 program this year. Porsche has made several significant changes to the 911 GT3 RSRs for this year and we are excited to see them debut at Sebring."

In addition, the team has accepted its automatic invitation to the 24 Heures du Mans in Le Mans France in June, 2008 and plans to compete in what will be its fourth race there. Flying Lizard received the invitation for its class win at the Petit Le Mans in October, 2007. The team will announce more details on Le Mans plans later in the year.

2007 SEBRING FINISH VOTED SERIES' GREATEST MOMENT

The final-lap duel between Risi Competizione and Flying Lizard Motorsports at Sebring last year was voted the Series' Greatest Moment by fans.
Throughout its history, the American Le Mans Series has been filled with memorable and celebrated moments. With the start of its 10th season on the horizon with the 56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida, the Series announced its Greatest Moments as chosen by fans through Internet voting.

Quite appropriately, the most exciting finish on the Series' premier stage was chosen as its Greatest Moment - the climatic GT2 finish at Sebring in 2007 with Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo and the Ferrari F430 GT beating Jörg Bergmeister in an all-out drag race on the final lap by just 0.202 seconds. It is the closest finish in the history of the 12 Hours.

"It's a great honor to have been voted the American Le Mans Series' No. 1 greatest moment, especially because this accolade comes from the fans," said team owner Giuseppe Risi. "Since Risi Competizione has been involved in the Series, we have raced with and against some of the greatest names in motorsport and enjoyed a level of competition that is, in my opinion, the best in the world. I warmly applaud the American Le Mans Series for giving us and the Ferrari marque the opportunity to offer to fans the type of entertainment that was seen at Sebring last year. I hope we can repeat our victory in 2008, though I have to say I think we would all prefer the winning margin to be a little greater!"

"I'm very proud to be a part of the American Le Mans Series' No. 1 greatest moment," Melo said. "Lots of people have asked me about that last lap. We had some brake issues and we'd double stinted our tires, so I knew it would be hard but I just tried to keep calm and do a good job. I knew it was really important for me, the team and for Ferrari to win, but I didn't realize then how much of an impact it would have - especially on the fans. We go racing to put on a good show for them, and perhaps this was one of the best shows so far. I wonder what will happen this year...?"

Corvette Racing's first Series victory at Texas in 2000 ranked second, followed by the fantastic 2007 finishes between Audi and Porsche at Petit Le Mans and the Monterey Sports Car Championships. Champion Racing's overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2005 rounded out the top five.

The first race of the Series - Sebring in 1999 - led the second half of the voting with the 2000 finish at Mosport between Audi and BMW (the closest overall finish in Series history at 0.148 seconds) next. Rounding out the list were the Audi R10 TDI's debut at Sebring in 2006, the Audi R8's debut in 2000 and Panoz Motor Sports' thrilling overall victory at Washington.

Honorable mentions were Panoz's win at Nurburgring in 2000, Pedro Lamy's flight in the Aston Martin at Mid-Ohio in 2006, Acura's debut win at Sebring in 2007, Dyson Racing's 2003 overall win at Infineon and Aston Martin's 0.033-second win at Lime Rock in 2006 for the closest finish in Series history.

Peugeot naar Sebring
Ter voorbereiding van de 24 Uur van Le Mans nam Peugeot enkele weken geleden aan de Wintertest op Sebring deel. Alleen om de 908 HDi FAP verder te ontwikkelen neemt Peugeot definitief aan de 12 Uur van Sebring deel. Technisch directeur Michel Barge van Peugeot: “Wij hebben ons tot doel gesteld om nog meer gewicht te besparen en de onderdelen verbeteren. Omdat wij vorig jaar weinig tijd hadden, konden wij dit niet doen met het 2007 spec.-chassis. Ons programma heeft nu al voordeel opgeleverd met betrekking de wielophanging, het differentieel en het schakelmechanisme Omdat het gewicht afhankelijk is van de dieselmotor, moeten het naar 900kg brengen zoals het reglement voorschrijft.”

Verheug me nu al op de ALMS. Lekker lui met een biertje op de bank genieten van zo ongeveer de mooiste racers van dit moment. Daarnaast zijn de races meestal erg spannend.

Mijn vriendin die letterlijk niets snapt van autosport maakte al de opmerking dat de F1 wagens wel erg dicht bij elkaar reden en die met dak waren toch wel mooier dan zonder dak maar waarom die dan nu aan de kant gingen voor de auto's zonder dak. Duren nu alle F1 races zo lang? ............tja vrouwen

Vind ik ook hoor. Maar je moet de vrouw des huizes wel een beetje te vriend houden. Zegt ook genoeg over de ALMS dat ze toch de moeite nam om even te kijken.

En dan vooral de finish van Sebring tussen de Risi Ferrari en de Lizard Porsche.

Helemaal bijzonder is dan natuurlijk dat ik 3 kwart jaar later de Risi F430 uit pakte en dus de gebruikelijke opmerking: "heb je nu alweer een autootje gekocht?" kon pareren met de tegen opmerking: "ja, maar deze Ferrari won die spannende finish weet je nog"? Oh dat is dan wel weer een bijzondere auto en leuk om te hebben.........

Welk team heeft dat nu niet, de kleuren schema van de white lighting is ook al bijna elk jaar hetzelfde, de Risi is ook elk jaar rood, Tafel Racing's 430 is ook gewoon een copy van de RSR van vorig jaar, de Peugeot's zien er ook hetzelfde uit als vorig jaar, de F1 Ferrari voor dit jaar is ook weer rood, moet ik nog even doorgaan
Dit is gewoon de Flying Lizard en zo hoort hij ook, buiten het feit dat de Le Mans versie uberbruut was zou het best kunnen dat ze dit jaar weer zoiets doen, en het is een shakedown, seizoen is nog niet eens begonnen

Maar ik denk dat Porsche dit jaar veel sterker terug zal komen, vorig jaar was de auto nieuw, log en op sommige punten lag het gewicht van de auto verkeerd, dat is dit jaar erg verholpen en met meer fabrieks-steun rijden ze de Ferrari zo weer zoek, vorig scheelde het maar 0,2 seconde, dus

Denk je dat ze bij Ferrari stilzitten?? Overigens is de F430 ook vrij nieuw.

Vorig jaar waren Salo en Melo onnodig vaak betrokken bij aanrijdingen. Vooral door wat onervarenheid in de ALMS. Maar als ze dat probleem onder de knie hebben dan winnen ze dit gewoon weer het GT2 kampioenschap.

Dat hoor je mij niet zeggen Maar Porsche heeft een eer hoog te houden. En vrij nieuw is alles wel, maar de FL was in Sebring nagelnieuw en de 430 had toen al een jaar rondgekacheld
