"BMW Sauber F1 Team" registered with the FIA.
11/14/2005

New name of the game:
"BMW Sauber F1 Team" registered with the FIA.

Munich, 14th November 2005. Born in June, christened in November: the newly formed BMW Sauber F1 Team has been registered under that name with the FIA ahead of the 15th November deadline for entries for the 2006 season.

As BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen explains: "The new team name more or less chose itself. It reflects the makeup of the team – run by BMW but with a core of almost 300 Sauber employees. Plus, the 2006 car was developed by Sauber's proven engineers."

Sauber's Technical Director, the German Willy Rampf, will continue in his post at the Hinwil location. Heinz Paschen, meanwhile, remains Technical Director in Munich, where not just the engine but now the entire powertrain will be built. Walter Riedl will be responsible for coordination between the two locations in his capacity as Project Manager.

Peter Sauber is looking forward to his advisory role and welcomes the latest decisions: "It's nice to see that the Sauber name will continue in Formula One. I'm particularly pleased for Sauber’s many loyal fans, who I'm sure will support the team with unbowed enthusiasm in the future. The new team's name is also an expression of the huge respect which BMW has for the employees in Hinwil."

Following the christening, it won't be long before the team takes its first steps. The BMW Sauber F1 Team will be officially presented on 16th and 17th January 2006 in Valencia, Spain, where the new car will embark on its first round of testing without further ado.

First, though, the team will start winter testing with an interim car and the new BMW P86 V8 engine. The testing programme begins on 28th November in Barcelona, Spain.

Munich/Hinwil, 1st December 2005. It's now official: Jacques Villeneuve will line up alongside Nick Heidfeld for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in 2006.

As BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen explained: "We took a close look at Jacques' performance level at the end of last season. After an extremely tough first half of the year - which showed that even a former World Champion cannot come back after a period away and be competitive from day one - he got closer and closer to his team-mate over the second half of the season. We are in no doubt that Jacques will make the BMW Sauber F1 Team stronger."

"Between 1999 and 2004 I experienced first-hand the difficulties and complexities involved in setting up a new team," said Villeneuve, "but I've never been afraid of a challenge. Sauber was already a good team and now we also have the resources of BMW behind us. I will do everything I can to contribute to the success of the BMW Sauber F1 Team."

Now living in Villars, Switzerland's adopted son will start work for the new team in the first testing session in Jerez on 8th December.

Villeneuve was crowned Formula One World Champion faster than any other driver before or since after making his debut in the series. In 1996, his rookie year, the Canadian finished second in the overall standings behind his then Williams Renault team-mate Damon Hill. The following year, he fended off the challenge of Michael Schumacher to go one better and take the title for the same team.

On 22nd June 2005, BMW made public its commitment to head its own team in Formula One after taking a majority interest in the Sauber team from 2006. The signing of Nick Heidfeld was announced on 16th September, followed by confirmation of the official team name and the identity of key positions in the team - with Willy Rampf (Chassis/Hinwil) and Heinz Paschen (Powertrain/Munich) as Technical Directors - on 14th November. The partnership with Petronas was then finalised and announced on 24th November.

Testing with the Sauber C24B interim chassis (modified for the BMW P86 V8 engine) got underway on 28th November. At the same time, the development of the V8 engine and 2006 chassis has continued apace in Munich and Hinwil respectively.

Pole for BMW Sauber F1 Team - The squad of drivers is complete. Robert Kubica of Poland is to be the third man in the BMW Sauber F1 Team as the test and substitute driver. He will also be at the wheel of the team's number three car deployed in the Friday free practice sessions.

Robert Kubica, een Pool die zijn eerste F3 race meteen won. Veel meer weet ik ook niet van hem maar hij heeft afgelopen jaren hard aan de weg getimmerd in de Renault World Series.
